ABBEY After completing his formal education he entered into an Apprenticeship in Architecture in June of 1965 and attended Art School and Technical College for Building Design & Technology. He was accepted as a Probationer of the Royal Institute of British Architects in the same year and completed parts one and two of the Intermediate Examination by means of External Testimonies over the next three years. In 1978 he became a Senior Surveying Technician by satisfying the admission requirements and becoming an Associate Member of the Society of Surveying Technicians. Upon arrival to Canada in 1981 he applied for membership to Construction Specifications Canada and he currently serves on the Executive Committee in the capacity of Architectural Officer and Student Liaison. In addition he became an accredited Member of the Association of Architectural Technologists of Ontario and served on the Governing Council since 2005 and was AATO President from 2009 to 2011 and now serves as the Vice President and College & Faculty Liaison Officer. Matthew remained dedicated to growing professionally by completing his Ontario Building Code Compliance Certificate at Humber College, the Building Science Certificate at the University of Toronto and the CanPHI Passive House Designer course at St. Paul University in Ottawa. Most recently, Matthew has been working on his Bachelor of Building Science Degree at Algonquin College which will be completed in April 2019. In addition to the above, he has attended many professional seminars since starting out. All this over the past six years and while working full-time! Matthew is a licensed designer under the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (small building and structural) and has been providing custom design and renovations for the past three years with his own firm, TenHouse Building Workshop. At -30-, Matthew assisted as the primary technologist for investigations on building conditions regarding structure, building envelopes, fire separations and exterior architectural building features. He also carried out surveys using a Total Station and Faro Focus laser scanner. He was then promoted to manager of the technologist team where he led in technical expertise and reviewed all small buildings drawings for design improvement and code compliance. Finally, he was promoted to associate and acted as a client liaison, writing building condition assessment reports including restoration scopes. In the past year, Matthew has left -30- to pursue his own firm where he employs two technologists and has a network of builders. Matthew is passionate about building design and is extremely motivated to build a career in providing high quality buildings. He is a dedicated building design professional skilled in architectural design, structural design, building optimization, 3D conceptual planning and project management, especially as they relate to small buildings. His goal is to build high performing, beautiful homes that are sustainable and make people happy.
